Indian Businesses that are flourishing abroad

According to a CII report in 2020, as many as 155 Indian businesses have invested $22 billion in the US, thus creating nearly 125,000 jobs in the country.

Indian businesses have seen many ups and downs in its Economic Policies since the independence. From a conservative economy to Economic Liberalization in 1991, India’s focus seemed to be shifting from troubleshooting of the post-independence chaos to growth and development.

Still with many holes to fill, India has been growing in terms of businesses. In 2022, we can see startups like Zomato and Zerodha building on millions of dollars of funds. We can see smaller startups sprouting everywhere, including rural lands. These businesses usually start in India, and go on to expand globally.

There are many Indian businesses now operating globally. In fact according to a CII report in 2020, as many as 155 Indian companies have invested $22 billion in the US, thus creating nearly 125,000 jobs in the country. There are large companies like Jaguar, Land Rover (Owner by Tata Motors) and Hamley (Owned by Mukesh Ambani) operating and supplying all over the world.

Indian-origin Startups with base in the US

There are many Indian businesses now originating outside India. Here is a list of 5 startups that are owned by Indian-origin founders in the US:

1.Bloom Energy – A Clean Energy Company

Dr. K. R. Sridhar and his team built a fuel cell for NASA, capable of producing air and fuel from electricity generated by a solar panel. The company has helped customers generate millions of kWhs of electricity and eliminate CO2 from the environment. The market value of the firm is approximately $3 Bn.

2. Robinhood – A Financial Service Company

This is a California based company, which allows individuals to invest in publicly traded companies and exchange-traded funds listed on US stock exchanges without paying a commission. The startup has received $66 Mn in funding from celebrity investors like Jared Leto, Snoop, and Nas. The founders are Baiju Bhatt and Vlad Tenev.

3. Zenefits – Health Insurance and Health Advice

Zenefits is a platform that gives best health advices including services and products. It provides healthcare solutions for the companies to offer to their employees. Its services are further categorised as, medical / dental / vision, life and Disability, commuter benefits, flexible spending accounts, health saving accounts. The founder is Laks Srini and it is valued at $2 Bn.

4. Sprinklr: A Unified Customer Experience Management Platform

New York-based Sprinklr is the unified customer experience management platform for enterprises. It helps brands reach, engage, and listen to their customers over 23 other social media channels for the purposes of marketing, advertising, research, care, and commerce. It works with over 1,200 global companies including Nike, McDonald’s, Microsoft, P&G, and Samsung.

5. Rubrik: A Cloud Data Management Platform

Rubrik is a Cloud Data Management platform that provides instant application availability – for recovery, search, cloud, and development for hybrid cloud enterprises – with simplicity, instant data access, app-mobility, policy-driven automation, Ransomware protection, and analytics at scale. The founder is Mr. Bipul Sinha and the company is valued at $1 Bn.

These Indian businesses, and many others, are surely the way to make us “India Proud.” We must also learn from these companies, observe their approach and apply best their practices to our own businesses.
